I saw Cliff Richard with The Shadows and a host of other bands and singers when I was about ten. I went with my dad - think my ticket was my mum's. My dad loved The Shads so we had a great time. |

Hi lindatee2002,
My Pam went to see them at Coventry Hippodrome, got their autograph, but missed the last bus back home to Bedworth. I don't know the date, but around 1960-62ish.
This was before I knew Pam. I first met Pam in 1963, when she was all smiles, stood next to my organ bench. It was another two years before we went on our first date, Saturday, in June 1965 at the Alpha restaurant in Jordan Well. They excepted LV luncheon vouchers, they weren't supposed to in the evening, but a blind eye was turned.
ps. I know it was June 1965, but it may have been a Monday evening for my first date with Pam at the Alpha. Afterwards, we whispered sweet nothings in Greyfriars green.

I don't remember who was the first, probably the Beatles in 1963 but most times you would go to see one group and there would be a lot more acts on in the 60's. I know I saw Adam Faith because he was my favourite and I went round to the stage door and got (and still have) his autograph signed to "Annette", also saw many bands at the Lanchester and, I think it was called, the Matrix on Fletchamstead Highway. Also followed the Coventry band around a bit who played in various pubs including The Walsgrave. If someone had a car we would go the The Swan at Yardley or the Steering Wheel at Hinckley. We were so lucky in the 60's there was so much live music. |

I've looked through Rob's fantastic list of concerts/shows/films at the Cov Theatre and well remember seeing Gilbert O'Sullivan there in the early 70's, but can't find anything datewise, even using the search option. Have I missed something? Question |

An off-shoot really of this topic.
Rob's link for Coventry Theatre shows a lot of films being shown in the later years.
Does anyone know if there were any repercussions from the established cinemas to this? Mick Strong

It seems he sold out for a one-night stand at the Coventry Theatre on 27 May 1973 - but I can't find any more details
Update: The following night he played Preston Guild Hall, with Mud as the "warm-up act" - report |

Hi Lindatee, bet I was there with you the night of the Stones. I went to Woodlands School with a mate whose older brother worked the door. Mick Strong

Hi folks! Thanks for pointing that one out, and thanks also for finding the date for that one-night show.
When I put the archive together, I worked through each Coventry Evening Telegraph week-by-week, and used their regular Theatre Guide to fill in all the shows. I've copied below a screen-shot of their guide for the 1st May 1974, just four days before Gilbert O'Sullivan had another show there..... and as you can see..... no mention of poor ol' Gilbert! No earlier guide listed him either!
I did a wider search for all newspapers and found the 1973 date that MR located above, plus the 1974 date, and have added those now. The trouble is, if I'd searched every newspaper for missing shows (and when I compiled this, I didn't know that they'd missed any!), then the project would've taken me years instead months, and you'd not have had anything to see yet!
So, please enjoy what we have so far, and if anyone thinks of any shows that are not yet listed, please let me know and I'll try to locate them and update the archive.
