Many thanks for your welcome. I worked on KESP (the synthetic meat product) and also synthetic tobacco, both equally horrendous. I thought Courtaulds had a great canteen although we were used as guinea pigs for KESP.

Reviving an old thread. You might say that my grandfather and family were taken over by Coventry: he lived in Gibbet Hill Road when Coventry bought the land from the Leigh estates in 1926. I say 'family' was just him and his wife as their daughter (my mum) had moved into the city.

On 13th Sep 2012 9:57pm, LdeMain said: My mother's side of the family have been in Coventry for several generations (the Hutts of VC fame!), my father family have been here since approx 1880's, before that Yorkshire - this may be wrong as my great grandfather changed our surname and I haven't got round to obtaining birth certificates yet.
Hello, your mum related to the Hutts, well Arthur Hutt was my grandad's brother (or my great uncle), my dad was Tommy Hutt, so this is interesting because I barely know any surviving members of the Hutts, some haven't got the Hutt name. Nice to know. Regards, Pete

My dad came to Coventry during the war, working as a factory inspector for the Home Office, and brought my mum with him. (Though I say dad and mum, my story is very similar to Philip's and my mum was in fact my auntie). My sister was born in 1942 and they lived in Middleborough Road. After the war both my parents went into business. My dad was also a speedway rider and was planning to ride for the Bees, but part of the deal was for my mum to get the catering concession. Then dad fell out with Charlie Ochiltree and that was that. I was born in 1954 and we lived above my mum's shop on the Holbrook Lane, until 1957 when we moved to Bennetts Road South.

I don't know what brought my family to Coventry. As I have bored you with before, my ancestors were here at least in the 16th century. They ran the Bastille Mill, a fulling mill, and lived in the Bastille Gate. The family must have liked Coventry as we have lived there until myself and my brothers gradually moved out and since my mum died in November there is none of us left there. I had lived in Radford until I got married, I met my future husband at work at the EMEB in Sandy Lane. We bought a house from a man who went to work for DeLorean. We lived there for a couple of years but with noisy neighbours we decided to get a detached house so we moved to my husband's home town of Tamworth where the property was cheaper. If anyone asks where I am from I always say I live in Tamworth but I am from Coventry.

Was born in Cov, 1944, in Sewall Highway. Left in 1960 to join RN, came home as and when I could. Left in 1965 to start courting young lady in Kettering, 1968 married young lady in Kettering. Still have family in and around Cov, still would count Cov as my home town.

My dad came up with his mum and brothers from Llandeilo, South Wales. His mum ran a grocers on the corner of Standard Ave and Eastcotes (now motor spares shop) in the 1940's, he went to the old Whoberley/Templars on Tile Hill Lane. He was still in contact with a dozen of his school mates 70 years later until his death a couple of years ago. My mum was from Windmill Road, Longford and her mum was a church goer and went to the church (long gone) in Bell Green which was situated opp the Bell Pub at the top of Bell Green Road. My nan was one of seven Styles's which grew up around that area. Mum and dad met at a dance, think it was the Arden ballroom early 1950's. Married, then had my late sister, moved to Hallbrook Road, Keresley. I popped out on election night 1959. In 1963 we all moved to Bulkington which seemed at the time like moving to another planet as most stayed local back then, we bought our new build in the village for £3,000 built by Johnson builders. I have since moved to Coventry where my wife and I now live with our 6ft 5in sons, both Arsenal fans - something went wrong there.
