I played for the Shepherd and Shepherdess when I was about 17-19, Gerry Hyland was the captain. Then I stopped playing for a while before we formed a team in the Golden Cross. We won promotion season after season in very close competition with The Winnal Pub, my finest hour being in reaching the semi-finals of the Coventry singles. This was a Wednesday night league as I recall. A couple of us also played for The Royal Warwicks on a Friday night - always a good spread. I played for The Greyhound for a while when Craig was the manager (forgotten his surname, but he was a big darts man). I also played in a Sunday night Darts/Crib/Pool/Bowls league, which was run by a brewery on a Sunday night around their pubs. I played for The Golden Cross, and I remember playing against The Acorn up Bell Green and the Half Moon in Brandon.
Hi Disorganised. I played for the Warwicks for many years when Pete and Janet were there. The Saturday night knockouts were also a great night and the Beef Dripping batches that Janet put on as part of a huge spread were absolutely fantastic. I played there on Mondays and Fridays earlier on in my darting days  |

Was there a big guy called Bob who was captain of the Warwicks, never took his jacket off to play? |

That would be Bob Ellis. An absolute gentleman and a fair player too. The jacket never seemed to hinder his throw. I first met Bob when I was playing for the Glade and we had a match against the Painted Lady. We went on to play in teams together in a few places. That would be around 1967 (I think). |

Another fine darts player who I never saw play without his coat on was the late Eddie Cameron he played a lot of his darts in later life at the Greyhound Much Park Street where the landlord was Craig Robinson, and his son Terry plays for the Willenhall Club. |

Yes, that was him, did he have a mate called Dave (tall guy) who played?

Not sure Mick, but I remember your name now, did you play in the Bulkington League at all, only my son Mark had the same initial as you and when ever I saw M. Strong on a sheet in any of the pubs I used to say to him is that you and he would say not me it's the lad from Masseys. My son still plays. |

What you have to remember is that I was 18 and very new to league darts when I played for the Glade. I am 67 now and would be lying if I said I could remember the gaffer there at the time. We had just moved to Coventry and lived in Marlcroft in a house facing Middle Ride. We moved to Ernesford Grange shortly after that and as I was working as a gardener for the Council I started playing for the Parks Club (by the Charterhouse). After that if memory serves me correctly came a couple of seasons at The Craven Street Club (good bunch of lads) then moving on up the road to The Chestnut (first time round).

I think that was before my time, at The Warwicks. The steward was a guy called Harry his brother was called Tom (remember my earlier comments about my memory) who was a big snooker player, the two of them taught a young lad a lot. I remember a chap called Chalky who would sing "where would old England be", after he'd had a few.
Harry left before I started playing for them, and I can't remember any of the team, except my mate Ady who took me back down there. This would have been about 1979 I guess. |

My late uncle was Norman Trewick of Tile Hill who was a leading local darts player in the 60s, he played in the News of the World competition and even played against a young John Lowe.
I think he played for a few pubs but the New Star was certainly one of them as I recall. |

The Stewards at the Warwicks when I was there were (as previously stated) Pete and Janet followed by Dave and Marie. I was also told that Ray Cookson was involved with the Warwicks in the past (prior to Pete and Jan). Please note as this is hearsay it is possibly not true!
