The tunnel under the manor is that direction yes. You can just see the old version of the Hare and Squirrel at the end of Cow Lane. The timber frame building on the right.

Is that tunnel still the same one as is now Helen? I may feel the need to go and get a 'Now and Then' if it is? - fancy a trip with your camera Rob Big grin

Indeed it is. There are a few pictures that use the gateway as a frame. The Hare & Squirrel was quite photogenic. The Herbert ought to have a then and now exhibition.

Yes, Helen, it frames some of our wedding pictures in 1969!

On 20th Oct 2017 12:22pm, NeilsYard said: Ahh I didn't notice that Cliff, thanks - so is the shot in #1 taken looking north east towards Cow Lane etc? Just trying to get my bearings. What was the reason for creating New Union Street, does anyone know - apologies for going slightly off-thread but it's at such a juxtaposition to the way it was around there.
Have you had a look on Side by Side Maps? Not the best image, but this photo was taken from roughly the same spot Thumbs up

Yes use that side-by-side all the time Cliff - brilliant tool - I've actually been in touch with the Scottish Library about its use.

As if by magic - this one just popped up on FB and perfectly shows the line of those weavers' houses before New Union Street finally cut through them. Yet another area to change drastically during the early '60s.

I remember New Union Street as where all the estate agents were. I never noticed the manor or the spire.

I wonder what date that picture was taken Neil? Very early 1960s I guess. I remember the old cottages, but from the back of them on the little lane which ran from the side of The Quadrant to the Manor House and onto New Union Street. I don't recall seeing them from the front.

Hi Rosemary Wave yes I looked on some old-maps and I think they were gone by '61.

My uncle had a carpet shop in White Street and had to vacate the premises due to demolition. He was allocated a new shop in New Union Street just down from the ones in the photograph.
