I am trying to find out about an old firm of Coventry Solicitors called Haymes and Claridge that operated from premises in Queen's Road. Any information greatly received.

I am a legal historian particularly interested in Coventry solicitors. I have been undertaking research into the above firm. Whilst they were taken over by Hughes & Masser who were subsequently acquired by Sarginsons, I am trying to find any photographs of two of the former addresses of the firm. The first address is 61 Queen's Road (they latterly moved to Rockfern House at 25 Queen's Road, which of course is still there), the second 49 Warwick Road. I suspect that the 61 Queen's Road address was eventually subsumed by the ring road, but appears to have been used by at least one other firm of solicitors, Johnson Greenwood. The Warwick Road address I suspect was similarly subsumed by the ring road near to the railway station. Interestingly Coventry council planning have a copy of planning consent to turn the garage at 49 Warwick Road into an office. I understand that John Haymes junior and Kenneth Claridge were residents of Earlsdon and had possible connections with Hearsall Golf Club. John Haymes and his father were seemingly solicitors to the Freemen's Society. Should anyone have any old photos of these two locations, or information about Kenneth Claridge, John Haymes or Malcolm Haymes, I would be interested to know.

Hi Dean, Number 49 Warwick Road is now under the tarmac in front of a tower block. Zoom out to view. Number 49 Warwick Road. It was knocked down round about 1970. The tower block was originally called Coventry House, there may be photos of number 49 connected to the planning of that building? Current view I don't know of any ordinary photos of it but the area does appear on Britain from above but I think 49 is behind the trees. Log in to zoom in. I think that 49 is just on the right hand edge of this photo. Forum library image A thought occurs that number 47 was originally 47 and 49 but were merged and the garage numbered 49. In which case the building is in that photo. Scratch that. 47 was always big. Originally called Roslyn House. 49 was just the back garden of a property no 4 Eaton Road or Grassmere Cottage.

61 Queens Road is at the link below and yes, was buried under the ring road. It was quite a bit older than the Warwick Road property, being there in 1888. Originally called Croft Gate. 61 Queen's Road Just visible opposite the church A good view - bottom of the photo 2/3s from the left Another view A search of the Coventry Collections index for Croft Gate gives the following (item one looks interesting) List of documents Additional - Croft Gate wasn't there on 1850 map and the road was called Butts Lane at that point. Hertford House, the other houses on Hertford Place and most of the buildings north of Queen's Road/Butts Lane were built by then. And finally from when this was Johnson Greenwood & Co.
