Plus the original flat roofed aero drone buildings at Armstrong Siddeley/Rolls-Royce, Ansty, known as the 'White City' and built in the 1930's for the airfield. |

I took this picture I think in 2007. Yet another great building now demolished.

Take a look at those wonderful Crittall windows and curved bays at The Coach.
I'm in my element looking at all these images of Art Deco buildings we have/had. It's such a shame many of them are gone. |

Here is a front view. Looking head on, the building is too wide to fit the whole thing in, even from standing across the road on the opposite pavement.
Here are the art deco lamp posts.

Used to go in the Gate in the early 70s and wasn't keen on the fixtures and fittings. Little did I know then that they were the original art deco features. Long gone now though.
Truth be known I used to think Moderne was horrid but somehow I was attracted to it even as a youngster. Its only in the last 15 years or so I've become seriously in love with it.
I spent my 60th birthday weekend at Burgh Island a few years ago, I was like a kid in a sweetshop, I adored it. |

I don't think this building has been mentioned, the lovely Coventry Technical College building, now a Premier Inn.

Have not been inside it but I believe they have kept a few of the original art deco features including this staircase

Hi Annewiggy,
Post #4
The recently demolished Fletchamstead pub was another, the horrific facade hides the gem that was once the Standard cinema just a stones throw away. The Tollgate, The Phantom Coach, The Wallace pubs have all got elements too. The Technical College in The Butts is a wonderful building (go and look inside and marvel). The Rialto Plaza building in Coundon, the Gaumont cinema, not forgetting the Redesdale and Ritz cinemas.
When the situation allows, and if you're able I would suggest you take a look inside The Butts College building, its lovely. The forged guard staircase and handrails are exquisite.
On completion it was a building that Coventry was rightly proud of. |

I would like to see it now. I attended the college in the 1960, on day release for 2 years to do my ONC in business studies and then a night class in dressmaking. I am afraid as a teenager I did not take much notice of the architecture and the only thing I can remember is the built in vacuum cleaning system! I am a big fan of Art Deco design, love to watch Poirot for that! Another building I would like to revisit is where I worked then, what is now Harp Place in Sandy Lane. There used to be lots of tiled walls and wrought iron in that building but I think it was probably more Victorian. I believe it is now flats and would like to know if they kept any of the features |
