Torrington Avenue had a few Art Deco examples, I worked at the Torrington Company for a short while and remember it had an impressive frontage but can't recall the style, it was demolished to build the CostCo warehouse. I'd previously assumed the factory was named after the road but it was the other way round. The company was named after its home, Torrington, Connecticut in New England, which in turn was named after Torrington in Devon (in Old England).

Thanks everyone for your responses - I seem to have started a popular thread. Great photos and information, some of it is new to me. Thanks again. Nikolaus Pevsner, in his Warwickshire volume in his "The Buildings of England" series, published in 1966, makes no mention of Art Deco structures in Coventry. He is very heavy on churches and public buildings, but mentions nothing in the way of factories or places of entertainment or hospitality. He does mention the War Memorial, but calls it "oddly reminiscent of the Russian Stalin style" - I always thought of Stalin as a psychopath rather than an architect! Pevsner's choice of which buildings to include is erratic, and he can be very scathing of buildings he doesn't like. His books, though, are a mine of information (or a total cul-de-sac if the building you are looking for isn't there).

Would the main entrance to Wickmans at Banner Lane have counted (sorry but do not have a decent picture)?

I think I heard once that Art Deco was inspired by ocean liners? The picture below from Rob's collection shows what they were getting at. Forum library image Off topic but there's an interesting hump with trees and big houses in the distance beyond Bishop Street. I never noticed how prominent it was. It explains why the roads and canal skirt it.

I think probably more than the gatehouse, Mick. I seem to recall the "staircase" in the factory building at the top of the drive was rather Art Deco Thumbs up

There is a nice Art Deco house in Binley Woods just by the primary school and before you get to Cov Stadium. I do not know how to put a link to Google earth. Oh my

I believe this is the property, scrutiny. I'm not sure it's an original, I think its more likely to be a modern house built in the art deco style. Nice though innit, although I wouldn't want to live in such close proximity to a school. Besides I've got my beady eye on a smasher in Bath when my numbers come up on the lotto!!!

The house was there in the sixties but without the render, just brick. Whom ever bought it finished it off nicely without change to the building, I think somewhere around nineties but not sure of exact date. Thumbs up
