The man in the light coloured coat standing behind the offside front wheel of the car (below the sign "London") in the photo of post 7 is my wife's grandfather A.E. Shale. He worked for Elliott's as a mechanic around the time of WWII.

Hi Moriarty - hope you're well? I have been going back through some older posts and I came across your mention of A.E. Shale. Researching my family tree, I have an Albert Edward Shale who, on the 1939 Register, was aged 44 yrs and whose occupation was 'garage mechanic'. His wife was Agnes Shale, and they lived in Burnaby Road. Are they the same person?

Hi Oddsock, Yes, post 17. That's my wife's grandma and granddad. I think he was a foreman at Elliott's, they certainly had use of a car during the war years. Her grandma owned a fish and chip shop on the London Road in the late forties. They seem to have lived around the Redford area. My sister in law spent a lot of time making a family tree which I have somewhere! but the results are a bit disappointing, although she went all over, she never found the origins of the name and only got back to the 1800's. I thought about having a go at it but that's as far as I got! My wife tells me he had brothers and his wife had sisters so perhaps this is the connection with your family. Cheers, sorry not much help really.

Hi Moriarty, Thanks for your reply. The 'Shale' family are on my wife's side of our family tree (I'm just the one doing the research!), and she is descended from Albert's sister Selina. I'm always a little wary of posting too much personal detail on forums as privacy must be respected, however I can confirm Albert did have TEN siblings, the majority of whom I have researched and have information on. Your wife may also be interested to know that Albert's parents, her Great-Grandparents, Samuel & Emma, are buried together at the London Road Cemetery (unmarked grave unfortunately). If she'd like to know more, please let me know. OddSock

Prof as per the Gulson Road Hospital thread - Herbert's Row was a bit further east down towards the Sherbourne / Vecqueray Street
