Thanks for the info Dutchman, according to my info the pub/bar was in the building that accomadates Bennetts insurance on the side of said building and this was approx 1972-3
The Mercia was opened in 1967. It was located mainly in West Orchard but was connected by a long passage way to a narrow entrance in Cross Cheaping.
It was later known as, "Nobby's Place", "Cask & Bottle" and "Bar Zest".
The building is now "Barcode" Afro-Caribbean hair stylists.

Does anyone remember the old Dolphin pub in Prior Deram Walk? The one I'm referring to was on the same site as the current one but was a low single storey timber building, painted green with one main central entrance in the middle at the front and another at one end for an off-licence, I think.
In the late fifties, many nights my brother and I were given packets of Smiths crisps and a bottle of pop to consume in the car in the front car park, with mum often popping out to see we were ok (bored and cold really!). No, we were never attacked by anyone and my dad never collided with anything on the drive home just a few streets away |

Hello All
My late Father in Law had started a "Then and Now" photo project of his own but never got to complete it.
My husband and I would like to complete the project and have hit a barrier.
We have a picture from 1929 of the Binley Arms Hotel but we have no idea as where it was taken.
Anybody able to shed any light?
Thanks
Paula

Hi Les, Yes I also recall the original Dolphin pub. I walked passed it almost every day on my way to/from Sir Henry Parkes School. Never went in as my parents spent most of their "social" life up at "Canley Club" |

Here's a link to to a similar picture:

Apparently it changed its name to The Binley and I have found a picture of it front on but still have no clear idea of where it was located.
Thanks

I remember the old Dolphin - looked more like a large green shed than a pub. My girlfriend lived just round the corner in Mayor's Croft circa 1956-61. |

Does anyone remember a pub in the city centre which Im sure was called The Thistle? Think it somewhere around the Arcade possibly near to where the large Argos is now. I remember going in there once and it ironically being full of scottish people.
The Penny Black was the first pub I ever went into taking my first trip into town on a saturday night. |

You're right, The Thistle was down at the end of the arcade, near to the hi-fi shop called 'Electronic Services' run by the Barton brothers. |

Opened 6th March 1962. Replaced a pub of the same name in West Orchard destroyed in 1940.
Closed 1991 to be replaced by Argos.
