Hi Wave As an ex-employee of the Coventry Building Society I would be interested to hear of any memories or experiences you have had over the years. As a child it always felt like there was no another option but the 'Economic' for banking. I remember it being a pretty big thing going to see the manager to open my first account. When I worked there I met many people who were coming up to retirement that had worked there since they left school, there was a real sense of community amongst the staff and the branch staff knew their customers really well. We always got lovely gifts at Christmas from some fantastic customers. I used to go to some customers houses to help them if they had problems going to the branch. I spent a few years working on the reception desk of the High Street branch and spent the majority of the time chatting away to customers, it was a brilliant job! Unfortunatley this changed and there was a move away from the more personal side to customer relations, by the time I left it just felt like working in any of the many impersonal high street banks that we now know. Hi All Smile I don't and have never worked for a 'company'. For my sins I work in local government. Having said that 10 years ago I loved my job and enjoyed going in everyday. Now due to all the cuts I hate it. I have 3 times as much to do and I'm expected to take a pay cut to continue. There are lots of things that remind me of the 'good old days'. Without meaning to sound cheesy - having lived in various locations around England and Wales - the fact that I can leave my front door and instantly be in some of the most beautiful countryside makes it all worth while Smile Paula

Just found this one buried within the Coventry Building Society FB page so presume its an early office - High Street possibly - anyone know for sure? I did see Anne reference they were originally occupiers of the Martins Bank building at one point.

It's an early branch on LPS. Next door but one to the Georgian side of The Castle on the left. The 'one' started as a driveway for The Castle building, then had a two storey fill in which was finally raised to three storeys. The building in the photo was also much older than the photo suggests.

Was that part of the row that later became what was then the Register Office Helen?

No, it was the north side of The Castle. You can see it in the aerial shots post war. View on Britain From Above In the same picture you can see where they moved to on the High Street, opposite Hay Lane.

We Shepherds had a lot to thank the Economic for in the 60/70's, they helped us settle in our first home. Thumbs up

Hey, I'm still with them after 54yrs. In today's standard they still have an acceptable rate of interest. Smile

I started saving at the Foleshill branch in Station Street towards getting a mortgage for a house. When we came to buy our house in Abingdon it was plot number 508 in August 1969 and the building work was finished ready to move into in April 1970 with a mortgage from the Coventry Economic. We have had a branch in Abingdon for at least 50 years and still save with them. Also we still live in our very first home.
