My parents were married in St Mark's in 1930. Mother was second of three daughters married there, all from 98 Stoney Stanton Rd. ln 1932 my christening at the same church was refused as the name Jerry was seemingly taboo. Jeremiah, Jeremy type names were acceptable but not Jerry as it was a nickname of a certain household appliance - l ask you! Needless to say the deed was solemnized at St Peter's, closer to home in Canterbury St.

My grandparents were married there in April 1901 and their eldest son, Frederick William Whitehead was baptised August 1902, they lived at the time in Little Church Street. By 1907 they had moved to Charterhouse Road, off Gulson Road, where my father and aunt (twins) were born in October.

Similar view from 2010 Thumbs up The foundation stone for St Mark's Church was laid on 5 May 1868 and the church was consecrated the following year. It was damaged by bombing at Easter 1941, but was repaired and reopened for worship in 1946. In 1963 the East Window of the church was taken down and replaced by a 35ft mural painted over the altar in 1969. The church closed in 1972, and the organ, new in 1947, was transferred to St Martin's in the Field Church, Green Lane. The building was used as an outpatients department of Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital until 2006
