Yes I know the face, the features of the Oldhams. Yes our two families lived and worked together for over a century. Did you read the post I sent you on the tragic accident of the ten year Oldham boy way back a century ago? The boy and girl, my sister and I went to school with and Greg informed me ran the Aldermans Green post office, ten years ago, Oh yes, one of them I did speak to once at the Lythalls Lane track around 54 I believe. Guess some of them still live near the cut. |

Interesting reading all of this. Being a greyhound owner, in the early 1960's, of a registered greyhound that raced at Hall Green greyhound stadium. Having first gained an interest in greyhounds as an 18/19 year old, when my best friend introduced me to greyhound racing at Lythalls Lane. Must have been 1962/3 time.
At that time Coventry shared its greyhounds with Leicester.
My friend loved gambling, I loved kennel maids.
We bought our first greyhound, from somewhere around Solihull area I think, Oldberrow Farm. They had greyhounds with that prefix, racing at Hall Green.
We purchased our greyhound, 1964 time, at 6 weeks old, paid £35.00.
We named him "Caludon Sandy", obviously based on the name of the school that we had been to. We actually registered the name "Caludon" as we planned to have more.
At that time, as registered greyhound owners with the GRA and other official bodies, we were not permitted to attend flapping tracks. It was against the rules for us and other registered greyhound owners.
Happy days. |
