Hi Mick, I think it's now called the Aardvark and I'm assuming that it used to be opposite an annex of the college as Rob mentions. It doesn't look like it would have had a Union Jack frontage but that might have been a banner?

There was the Russell Arms as well although that closed in '68.

Hi Neil, would that have been where the petrol station is now?

Anyone else agree this might be Butts looking towards Queens Road?

Also following my earlier post#200 looking at the David Fry collection on CD - this one ties up nicely with the view west - the junction with Gordon Street on the left with St Thomas' hidden -

Oh, most definitely.... at least I hope so, because that's how I labelled my own copy of this postcard. Big grin

As it's referenced on this thread it appears Apollo House is currently boarded up for some reason. It had only recently been developed for additional student accommodation.

This is a repost from #151 as it's a much clearer image of York Street at the junction with Moat Street - it's the one I've referenced in the Spon End thread. Kilbane's scrap Yard on the left - The Winfray building on Queens Road and Upper York Street in the distance -

I was blown away to see this photo, after it was renumbered to 68 I was born there in Aug 1959, thanks for posting the photo.

That's wonderful to hear, Taylorgx, what were the chances of finding that, eh! And welcome back to the forum after all this time - I hope you'll stop by and tell us more of your Coventry memories. Smile

I well remember the cycle track from when I was growing up in the 1950s, we lived on Allesley Old Road opposite Craven Street. The car park, visible in the photo, was resurfaced in pink/red asphalt c.1960 and I used to go roller skating on it in the evenings!

Another © Elizabeth Tyler. It's Thomas Street looking SW. You can see the crane is pending with removal started - probably in readiness for clearance and redevelopment to include the Ring Road. I need to look at what the taller twin-chimney building is in the distance to the right but I think you can just see the face of the Technical College - Oh and there's that Scrap-man! You can see The Coachmakers on this CD one with that section of Terraces to its right still in-situ. The Pub closed in '67 according to the Pubs section.

Jeffrey Stevenson on FB drew this picture of Thomas Street in 1967 as they were coming down for his A Level exam at Woodlands School - It nicely matches this slightly earlier one on CD of the same row - you can even see the same lamp-post!

Another from © Elizabeth Tyler. Outside The Coachmakers Arms in Thomas Street - you can just see Albion Street at the end. Three prams outside the Coachmakers Arms in 1963. At first I was horrified that there were babies left there but then when I looked closer I saw the prams were empty. But why were they there? I have a theory that scrap iron collectors had delivered their "treasures" to the nearby scrapyard and then spent the money at the pub.
