The east and west windows were destroyed in the blitz, replaced after the Deum window in the west, the Brides window in the east. But what were they before the blitz? In Canterbury Cathedral I saw a stained glass window of Adam digging his garden, the background being yellow, the old spades were wooden, eventually a metal blade was added like a shoe. I thought as a child I had seen the picture in some Coventry church? 1978 the Sunday Express published Adam the gardener book, week by week gardening, also a yellow background. 1950's in Pompeii I saw the ruins of a Roman palace, mosaic floors, marble veneers, richly painted walls, columns topped with carved capitals, all looking down to a view of the sea. 1970's in Fishbourne near Chichester, I saw the ruins of a likewise palace, mosaic floors, traces of formal gardens, a cloister, colonnaded walkways divided by an avenue 40 feet long, probably with grassy lawns either side, the land between the palace levelled, all looking down to a view of the sea as at Pompeii.
