21st Jun 1846 St. Osburg's church consecrated and quickly became one of the best attended Catholic churches in the county, recorded as having congregation up to 1,000 in 1851. 21st Jun 1974 H.M.S. Coventry is launched. (Sadly we all know what happened just under eight years later.)

24th Jun 1998 GPT, one of Coventry's largest employers at that time, and originally a merger of GEC & Plessey Telecommunications in 1988, merged with, and took the name of, Marconi Communications. Ah, the good old days, I remember it well! Smile Having been with the company since 1981 when it was still the GEC, the early 90s (by which time the company had merged with Plessey and become GPT) were a real low point, sadly throwing thousands of employees, colleagues and friends on the scrapheap. Sad By the mid to late 90s, however, the company had rallied and was a great place to work, winning a Queen's award for industry twice, I think. (I'm happy to be corrected by anyone who knows more about this.) Many previous employees returned once again, attracted by the relatively good wages. Cheers

Hi Rob, Hi all, Wave I believe that the GEC in Coventry was a social reformer in the early sixties. In my school days & throughout the fifties, my mum was one of the rare females to work full-time, or so it seemed. She had her own businesses & shops to run so I just accepted it. Many of my school chums thought it was odd too, even the fact that she drove her own car, not my dad's. Then, with so many liberated housewives, by means of washing machines & life's conveniences & so on, streams of ladies joined the GEC's newly started 6 till 10 shifts in the evenings. That was about 1959/60. That was a groundbreaking change in Coventry. Love reading this thread Rob. Cheers
