Just scanned a few images from this interesting book...
I saved it from being junked in the late 1970s when they were having a clear out at school (Coundon Court).
Can anyone identify the Hillfields locations in the first 2 pictures ?
From Trinity St looking towards White St
Will post more when I get time !
Cheers

Your second picture is of Albert Street taken from the block of flats at the end, the caravan is George Hilditch scrapyard, and the gable end further down is the Star and Garter pub. Opposite Hilditch's is what remains of Johnson and Mason after we demolished it, it backed on to the Ivy Cottage pub on Primrose Hill St.....

Dutchman . . in that case you must remember when the tower crane collapsed while building the flats in Hillfields, I am not sure if it's the crane in the first picture, and the driver was killed if my memory serves me right...

Afraid not Norm. I think I'd stopped visiting Hillfields before any of the tower blocks were built and prefer to remember it that way

Unfortunately in the headlong rush to modernise, Hillfields and so many other places were bulldozed to make way for the newer and, so we thought, better. It's only after costly lessons, both financially and socially, that we've learned that we might have refurbished and rebuilt some areas. Hillfields became an area to stay clear of. |

The same view these days is absolutely horrible.
How many buildings did they demolish to built that ring road? I'm not against ring roads, they can be good for distributing traffic, but the Coventry ring road is just so brutal and seems to have damaged the city so much. |

I lived in Hillfields House and was in St Mary's Infants School when this happened and saw the devastation when I got home. I cannot remember exactly which year it happened but I guess 1967.
One of the girls in my class, Mary Wilson, lived in one of the houses destroyed in Nelson Street.
I have clear memories of the area including Phillips' Hardware, Porter's Newsagents and D-Di's Ice Cream.
There was also a guy called Mr Grunsky who lived in Gilbert Street who used to take me to Coombe Abbey.
I have many memories so it is good to see the photographs and recall my times there.
