Tram No. 42 is the only tram to be made in Coventry, and used here. The picture was taken as the trams used a passing loop. The picture was taken in the 1930's Happy
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

Hi everyone, Southampton used to have trams as well, right through the middle of the city but alas they have all gone. It seems to me that all the old things from the past that were destroyed are now being resurrected. The Ocean Terminal in Southampton from where the Titanic set sail was pulled down the 1980's only to be rebuilt 20 years later, weird!!! Edited by moderator, Midland Red, 24th Jun 2012 10:56 am

I have read this topic with some interest, I cannot see any reference to a tram depot in Watery Lane just along from the old Convoy pub, I had a job to do at Rolls Royce in Watery Lane. I was somewhat intrigued as to the tram lines just under the tarmac surface, I asked one of the people who worked there and was told it was an old tram depot? I cannot confirm if this is correct or was he pulling my leg, so putting this info on here may it may provoke a response. The building was just after the row of houses on the left hand side as you pass the Convoy on your left if I remember correctly, I think it had a rounded roof but again not too sure. Colin.

Hi Colin Wave There was no passenger tramway in that part of Coventry and no buildings marked on the map of that area during that period. The lines you saw were more likely to be associated with the nearby colliery or possibly the water pumping station.

Thanks for that Dutchman. I thought if anyone would know it would be someone on here, I don't think they were winding me up, just think that's what they thought it was. Have to admit I did kinda think it was not linked to the trams after reading this topic and no one had mentioned it . So thanks for that Dutchman. I shall now refrain from passing comment about the old Rolls Royce works as being an old tram depot. Colin. Cheers

Hi all Wave Trams in Watery Lane??? I have just returned from having a conversation with my eighty six year old neighbour, who used to be a CCT conductor in the fifties. He tells me that the building that stood at the Watery Lane ninety degree bend was used by CCT for bus modifications & rebuilds until the late sixties. It did have rails set in the floor to house trams, which before the war were transported there on low loaders for major overhaul. The rails were never extended onto the public road area. I have no other means of verifying this, so can anyone else add to this, please.

I was looking at a completely different part of Watery Lane which is one reason why I didn't find the works. Another is that according to the CCT Society website the depot didn't open until 1942, two years after Coventry's tram service ended and so does not appear on any pre-war map. Here is a map from the 1950s showing the location.

Well it looks like their maybe some truth in what the Rolls Royce people were saying after all, seeing tram lines I think it was reasonable for them and me to assume the tracks were part of the tram network. I think after all my negative thoughts it turned out good, we now have a bit more info on the tram system as it was. Thanks to Dutchman and Philip. Colin.

Hi to you both Wave I think that I would go along with that, as the angle of the other tram suggests that they are at a Y point return junction. I did wonder about the Binley Rd, as another thought, but that is about all. Wave
