When I was a child and walked to Freddies School there was a little river/stream which flowed along the back of the houses in King Edward Road and was visible in Jesmond Rd(?) just off Harnall Lane. Could this have been the River Sherbourne?

I received this information yesterday from a Councillor - which now appears to add a time-frame to the project. "The City Council has been successful with a bid for European Regional Development Fund to develop a section of the River Sherbourne behind The Burges, adjacent to Palmer Lane. The project called 'The River Quarter' includes the de-culverting of the river that will contribute to water quality improvements and amenity value. The timescale for the completion of the construction is by October 2015. It is hoped that this will lead to other opportunities to open up further sections of the river in the City Centre."
