Shops of yore

Sadly, the building I was referring to does not seem to appear on this list. The company I worked for hired this building to put on an exhibition for two or three weeks and I was involved in putting it together. The building was empty before and after that and was eventually demolished to make way for Sainsburys.

I used to hate wearing stockings as my legs are quite fat. Woolies were the first place that started to sell tights. They weren't very pretty, either pink or blue nylon pants with legs attached. Soon though you could get all sorts of tights. Do you remember a little shop in the side of BHS facing Woolies that just sold loads of different sorts of tights?

In this photo by MR we see Fleet St from St John's to the turning into Holyhead Rd. The last shop on the right I remember was another one with young ladies repairing nylon stockings in the window. I had to pass it whenever I went to the Allesley (8) bus stop in Holyhead Rd to visit my grandparents in Coundon.

I think the greengrocers was Blue Chain Stores. They were next to Boots. I remember Fare Value, one of the first self service grocers (supermarket to today's generation!). Blue Chain Stores (greengrocery) rings a bell. One on the Holyhead Rd, opposite Malvern Road my grandmother used, been there many times.

Confirmed. On the corner of Redesdale Avenue. I can still picture the blue lettering and chain logo against a cream background on the front and side elevations of the large canopy overhang. My mum used to shop there, and I often accompanied her as a littl'un.

Was looking at my Bible that was given to me as a gift some years ago and it got me thinking where was the Christian/Church book shop in town?

In 1965 it was in Hertford Street I believe. My mother went in to order my 21st birthday gift (David Bailey's 'Box of Pin-ups'). I still have it.

Yes, Pixrobin, looking through the newspaper archives they were in Hertford Street. In December 1965 they moved to larger premises at 27 Trinity Street.

Keep that safe pixrobin - worth a fortune at auction.
