A few years ago the Coventry Telegraph released some lovely 1930s photos at a reasonable price, and one of them was a view of the Old Grammar School viewed from Hales Street. A nice side effect of this was that it also, when blown up a bit, gave a lovely view through to Lynes Stores, so I've cropped that part out for this topic....

Well Street from above
If you log in, the view of the north side of Well Street is quite good if you zoom in.
That's a good view of Well Street from that point Rob, usually it's out of focus. |

Wondering if anyone can remember the name of the toy shop on Ball Hill. It was on the same side as Woolworths a few shops down towards the corner of Briton Road. I used to save up and buy the Herald American Civil War soldiers their around the late 50's. Been trying to recall the name for ages. |

What a coincidence my wife and myself are renovating a Welsh dresser and we've been looking for some appropriate brass hardware but nothing we've seen in the likes of B&Q etc hasn't really come up to expectations I said to her it's a shame Phillips aren't still in business we'd have found exactly what we wanted there.
Phillips may no longer be in business - but their name lives on, still clearly visible on their old premises in King William Street

Rob,
Did you notice the bedroom window above Stenson's had curtains and blind, a little 'dolly' then I bet in the vase was a cast iron plant (aspidistra) that loved the dark rooms of the old Victorian era. Remember them well. |

I added a link to these on the Photo Collections thread however as it's been mentioned a few times on here - the original Coventry Sainsbury's store which was on the opposite side of Trinity Street to the one still there now.
(C) Sainsburys Archive.
Does anyone have an image of the Old Cov Map that was engraved into the black marble panels on the old southern entrance to the current 60's Sainsburys store? Right next to what was the Silver Sword?

Clever girl, Anne. Must have seen that a thousand times and not thought about it. Two smells I remember well in Coventry - the inside of Sainsbury's, also the smell of new leather shoes.
Neil - great photos. |
