Did there used to be dog kennels in Coventry Street in the 70s/80s?

Thank you. I thought I remembered one but my partner said there wasn't one there.

Hi Angelmaggot, I remember there being a place in Coventry Street in the 40s/50s we used to call the 'destructors' where dogs were taken to be put down. I believe that it was operated by the council.

Here's an article that comments on a Dogs Home in Coventry Street.

In the 1960s my dad always used to threaten our dog that he'd take him down to Coventry Street if he misbehaved. He was all talk of course and was as soft with the dog as we were! I thought it was the PDSA that was there.

Hi, in post 2, Philip says "There was an RSPCA house, opposite the dairy", and I'm sure he could say he saw it with his own eyes. Any further proof is unnecessary 'for me'. Thumbs up

The building in Coventry St was the PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals). You could take your animals for treatment by the vet, for those that could not afford to go private. The service was free of charge and relied on donations. Animals that were too sick would be put down by the staff. I used to work at the dairy directly opposite, Godiva Dairies. We could see the PDSA building from the bottling track and every couple of weeks a lorry would arrive and we could see the driver throwing the dead animals up and over into the back of the lorry. The stench was awful.
