Shops of yore

Thanks MR, I trawled the index for any previous posts but never thought to look in Shops of Yore!

Church Book shop was close or next to the Geisha cafe on the same side of Hertford St.

Believe that the Church Book shop was responsible for most of the books sold to Sunday schools in Coventry, including The English Hymnal.

I always remember him for his white gloves, and stories of him causing chaos attempting to direct the traffic in Broadgate. I remember the sandwich boards in Coventry advertising Benleys, which certainly was a cheap-jack shop. They once advertised in the CET "Rubber gloves only 1d per pair". I wonder what the quality was like! I daresay it was a loss leader to get people into the store.

Excellent advert, Anne, and it proves the words of the old Max Bygraves song; "Popeye the sailor and the fifty bob tailor". One of the jokey insults at our school was, when discussing fathers' jobs, "I know where your dad works, I've seen him sweeping up at Benleys!"

When did Dyers store on the Bell Green Road start trading and when did they close? I lived about 150 mts from them. There was Mr and Mrs Dyer and John Dyer their son and I think they had a daughter. In the early fifties there was a lady working there who said to me one day, "I know your mum and that when I was a baby, she used take me out in my pram".

Hi, my nan had a shop on Foleshill Road in the 1950's. It was a wool & baby linen shop. If anyone has any more information or maybe a photo, it would be great! Thanks.

Hi Steve, welcome to the forum. This might take a while to get an answer. As it's more contemporary than many of our topics it might get more response on Facebook, especially if there is a Foleshill site but people pop in here all the time from a variety of locations so it's worth waiting. We have people who might have been new parents or knitters in the 50s. I take it that the shop Heathite found wasn't the right one? The numbering hasn't changed as far as I can see. More modern images turn up on ebay so that might throw up something. There are a few books with post cards that include Foleshill but they might be too old for what you're looking for. Heathite, any idea what was at number 498? I'll leave this topic up for a few days and then move it to the Foleshill topic if you don't mind. That might elicit a response when this slips down the page.

I don't know what we'd do without you, Heathite Admittedly those buildings would come and go as shops but at some point it became harder to change from one to the other. Terence Woolley doesn't sound like a shop, even one selling wool. Ahh, there we go, it was 496 instead.
