Gorton Road

Can anyone tell me where Gorton Road was?

I cannot see Gorton Road on my Old Maps - Gulson Road was originally called Brick Kiln Lane and changed some time between 1906 and 1914. It does say on Heathites post above it was a no thoroughfare so presume it was just a small passageway - although there seems to be quite a few names listed on that directory.

If it went through from 28 Gulson Road, then it's Strathmore Avenue

Confirmation comes from the 1939 Register: Arthur Thomas Ash appears in Heathite's directory at 55 Gorton Road, and in the 1939 Register he is at 55 Strathmore Avenue

There is a newspaper article in the Coventry Standard 3rd May 1918 about Council meetings and the General Works Committee. The previous chairman of the committee Mr Grant had suggested the name GORTON ROAD because one of the earliest factories built in the area was built by the Gorton Brothers. The current chairman was Mr GORTON. The committee of Siddeley-Deasey (who must have had some input in the housing estate) had suggested another list of names. The name Gorton was apparently objected to because"Mr Gorton had the audacity to disagree with Mr Siddeley as to the beauty & elevation of the houses on the London Road". The suggestion for new names had come in after the names had been approved by the architect & plates had been affixed. Someone suggested that the roads had 2 names!! Mr Gorton told the committee that he would prefer that his name be withdrawn from the list of street names. The amendment was withdrawn as an alternative way of dealing with the names had been suggested in the form of the inhabitants taking steps if dissatisfied.

Hello NeilsYard. I have no way of verifying the date of the map. Story is, I went to the Birmingham Library to look at their Coventry directories in order to verify another image that I already have but is blurry. Luckily and fortunately, they have a new addition to their collection of Coventry directories. It is the 1921-22 directory, and in the back of the volume there is a map. It isn't dated. This must be policy, for some reason that I can't fathom, but I reckon it is deliberate because it happens so many times, it isn't an error. So that's as much as I can say about dating the map. I know Midland Red has solved the riddle 'logically' but there's nowt like seeing it in black and white. Regards, Heathite.

Nothing on my 1914 map but Strathmore is on my next one which is 1937 - so somewhere between the two!

I have dug out my family history notes made a few years ago and I have a note to say Gorton Road was changed in 1929 and became part of Strathmore Avenue. Thanks to all who have contributed to this item.

Ronald, this article is dated 7th April 1937 and is part of an article about confusing street names and lost letters. Sorry to confuse you. There are still references to Gorton Road in the early 1930's. Apparently the confusion was with Gordon Road !
