21st Jun 1846 St. Osburg's church consecrated and quickly became one of the best attended Catholic churches in the county, recorded as having congregation up to 1,000 in 1851. 21st Jun 1974 H.M.S. Coventry is launched. (Sadly we all know what happened just under eight years later.)

22nd Jun 1845 Coventry's most famed prize-fighter, William 'Paddy' Gill, fought and beat London fighter Young Reed the 'Invincible' after 59 (yes, fifty nine! ) rounds.

On 22nd June 1963, Coventry Bees entertained Swindon Robins in a National League fixture at Rugby Road, and completed a 44-34 victory, with a 12 point maximum from Nigel Boocock COVENTRY Bryan Elliott 4, Nigel Boocock 12, Ron Mountford 2, Jim Lightfoot (c) 11, Ken McKinlay 11, Les Owen 3+1, Rick France (r) 1 SWINDON Mike Broadbanks (c) 10, Martin Ashby 1+1, Peter Moore 9, Ian Williams 2+2, Neil Street 4, Brian Meredith 0, Tadeusz Teodorowicz (r) 8 This was in the days of handicap racing, where the "Star Grade" riders raced off a 20 yard handicap, and "Reserve Grade" riders with an average below 1pt per ride received a 10 yard start. The five "Star Grade" riders were Ove Fundin, Barry Briggs, Ronnie Moore, Peter Craven and Bjorn Knutsson. Both reserves in this meeting received the handicap start Sadly, Tadeusz Teodorowicz died in early 1965, having never regained consciousness following a track crash at West Ham in September 1964 Nigel Boocock went on to victory in the Stadium Scratch Race heat and final The second-half of the meeting also included two "Hunt for Talent" handicap races, and the riders featured were John Hensley, Len Davenport, Matt Mattocks, Col Cottrell and Howie Booton

On this day in 2016, in the National Referendum, voters in Coventry came out in favour of leaving the European Union. 67,967 votes were cast in favour of remaining (44.4%), 85,097 to leave (55.6%)

24th Jun 1998 GPT, one of Coventry's largest employers at that time, and originally a merger of GEC & Plessey Telecommunications in 1988, merged with, and took the name of, Marconi Communications. Ah, the good old days, I remember it well! Having been with the company since 1981 when it was still the GEC, the early 90s (by which time the company had merged with Plessey and become GPT) were a real low point, sadly throwing thousands of employees, colleagues and friends on the scrapheap. By the mid to late 90s, however, the company had rallied and was a great place to work, winning a Queen's award for industry twice, I think. (I'm happy to be corrected by anyone who knows more about this.) Many previous employees returned once again, attracted by the relatively good wages.

Hi Rob, Hi all, I believe that the GEC in Coventry was a social reformer in the early sixties. In my school days & throughout the fifties, my mum was one of the rare females to work full-time, or so it seemed. She had her own businesses & shops to run so I just accepted it. Many of my school chums thought it was odd too, even the fact that she drove her own car, not my dad's. Then, with so many liberated housewives, by means of washing machines & life's conveniences & so on, streams of ladies joined the GEC's newly started 6 till 10 shifts in the evenings. That was about 1959/60. That was a groundbreaking change in Coventry. Love reading this thread Rob.

25th Jun 1940 The first bombs of WW2 to be dropped in the vicinity of Coventry - 5 fell on Ansty Aerodrome. 25th Jun 1945 Winston Churchill visits Coventry shortly before losing the general election of that year.
