On 28th September 1930, the foundation stone for St Barbara's Church in Earlsdon was laid by Sir Alfred Herbert. There was a blessing by the Bishop of Coventry, Dr Lisle Carr, before Sir Alfred laid the foundation stone for the Lady Chapel which he was endowing in memory of his beloved wife Florence who had died in the previous June.

One hundred years ago today, on 1st October 1917, BE2e A3148, of 1 Aircraft Acceptance Park *, crashed on the outskirts of Radford aerodrome after an engine failure. Captain R H C Usher and Captain W E Reason, who was the chief technical officer from 'Norwich EOI', were both injured. * No 1 Aircraft Acceptance Park was formed at Radford as a private venture by Daimler and was quickly joined by Siddeley-Deasey and Humber. Aircraft were towed by road to the site for testing. Coventry was the centre of military aircraft production in WW1, with one quarter of the nation's output being produced there.

October 4th 1879 was the Godiva Harriers first run after their formation; notice there is no 'Coventry' in the club title. Other harrier clubs already existed in the city, notably, the Union Harriers and the Coventry Harriers. They are now one of the oldest clubs in the country. With the present day attitudes to healthy life styles, we now happily have several running clubs in the city but unfortunately only Coventry Godiva Harriers offers athletics in all its divergent forms to all ages (8 years +) and both sexes; this means that youngsters have to have committed parents to get their offspring to the Westwood Campus of Warwick University where the Godiva headquarters is situated.

4th Oct 1917 On this day, in Belgium, when all the officers and NCOs of No. 2 Platoon had become casualties, Private Arthur Hutt took command of the platoon. He ran forward alone and shot the officer and three men in the post ahead of them, and between 40 and 50 German soldiers surrendered. Later, he withdrew his party, covering them by sniping the enemy, and then carried back a wounded man to safety. After he had consolidated his position he then went out and carried in four more wounded under heavy fire. Arthur Hutt received the Victoria Cross for this - the first Coventry born person to receive one.
On 7th Oct 2017 1:52pm, Old Lincolnian said: A memorial to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Arthur Hutt's VC was unveiled this week. Arthur Hutt 100th anniversary memorial Our local paper managed to miss it!
