No success on the location yet, but it is passed my thousands of people every day - but mostly in cars. The stonework is a good clue - the wall is 1/4 mile long. I first thought it was an old Ordnance Survey bench mark, but my OS map didn't give a height at that point. After a bit of googling I concluded it was a GPO (Post office telephones) cable marker. The numerals which go beneath the ft & in have fallen out. There seem to be a few scattered around the country. Peter.

Correct, it is against the wall of London Road cemetery near the railway bridge. Peter.

Very interesting MR, I didn't know that. As I said on another post I served my apprenticeship as carpenter/joiner and so went to the Technical College. I skived off one day to go fishing and on that day bench marks were discussed. Of course, came examination day and one question was " Draw a bench mark and explain its use" I had no idea what it was so I drew a bench hook. I still cringe about that 65 years later.

I have been sent this photo to see if I can identify the location. The owner thinks it is in Coventry. The bus appears to be a Coventry Daimler CP6 in the series KV7101-9, but there is something obscuring the front of the bus. Could the location be pre-war Queen Victoria Road with part of the Rudge factory in the background?

Hi Laurence I'm pretty sure it's at the bottom of Gosford Street - the far building would be the Morris Engines factory (DHSS building) - nearer to the camera (above the letter E on the reg plate) can be seen the Calcott building Thumbs up Here it is on Google Street View

Was that factory once known as the Hochkiss factory or something similar? I remember watching that place burning.

Yes Norman, it was the Hotchkiss machine gun factory and I think they also made aero engines there before Morris took over.
