I've just viewed a marvellous aerial photo taken across Cheylesmore in 1954. I can see the house I lived in at that time in Seneschal Road. I can also trace the exact route I used to take as a small child on my own to Manor Park Primary School. That route at the end of the 1950s crossed the area now known as Quinton Park which at that time I only recall as a large area of rough waste ground with a scruffy pool in the middle. It was quite a scary area to cross as a small child and I used to run. I remember it in hindsight as being a bit sinister. It seemed a long way. I doubt children these days would be allowed to do it at such an age! One day I'll return and retrace my steps.

It's a great photo clearly showing the curving park boundary at the bottom. Thumbs up I'm guessing that the pool was to water the animals that were hunted in the park. Probably it also attracted waterfowl.

Thanks for that GJS, though I still don't understand the difference between the two parks.

That makes two of us Helen Big grin Perhaps the difference was one contained deer and other didn't????? No idea what the actual difference was. Also find it insane to think how large the Forest of Arden area was, that the Cheylesmore Park was a part of!!! I've been mulling the topography of the area and trying to work out why Coventry is where it is here and the next section is about the Forest of Arden. Also I've aired a few thoughts on the park here. Something that I've only recently discovered is that the area south of the Cheylesmore lane leading to the Cheylesmore gate, including the manor house were described as being 'in the park' in the 1860s. There are several kids' sketches of the buildings in that area that were impossible to place on the map until I worked out that 'in the park' didn't necessarily mean beyond the wall. Given that Little and Much Park Streets were originally shorter, that makes sense I suppose. Most recently I've been looking at Cnut's Viking invasion and working out how Leofric became the Earl of Mercia.
