Coventry makes us proud!

Is the indoor cafe still there run by the same man have nt been down there for years. I recall that round about being in the precient hehe showing my age now haha

Hi The cafe is managed by a gent who travels in from Worcestershire each day. He is supportive of events in Coventry. I have often seen him & his wife at events in and around Coventry. He came to our motor museum ice-cream van show, recently.

So pleased its still there thats wonderful he supports Coventry and travels such distance. Did the cafe use to be called Jims Cafe I recall the old owner tall thin black hair, he use to run the round about outside too

Hi Morgana, I had a neighbour who worked in the circular market her name was Vonnie Thorpe, she used to be on the baby wear stall. Lovely lady, used to let me know of all the nice baby stuff she had in when mine were little. Of course that would have been in the early 70's. Can't recall seeing a cafe in there then though.

Hi Dreamtime, Last time I was down there there was still a baby stall don't know if its still there perhaps Philip could say, the cafe use to be by the slope of the fish monger part, by the lifts to where they keep their wares below. There was also a cafe outside with the roundabout too.

The market cafe is next to the entrance from Queen Vic Rd, but as well as a side cafe serving batches & stuff. We must not advertise on here but when I tell you that I paid nearly trebble the market cafe price for a hot pork batch at Warwick races, and it was nothing compared to the dinner served in the market cafe batch, that says it all. Pass the pepper please.

I was reading about Coventry having a race course here in past old times they were clearing an area to make a race course , now where did I see that mmm any one know. I ve found it in on line history it was in Stokegreen then moved to Radford In the mid 19th century there was a race-course immediately north of Stoke Green and Binley Road.The races, which had been formerly held in Cheylesmore Park, were resumed in Stoke as Stoke Racesin 1834, but were transferred to Conduit Fields near Radford in 1849. (fn. 28) The site of the race-course,known as Stoke Park, was later developed as aresidential estate. (fn. 29)

Nooooooooooooooooooooooo ! nore me I have done my bit towards the population !!!!! On second thoughts, about the cafe, I may recall one, not far from the roundabout when it stood outside as you entered the market, but then we are talking about late 60's to early 70's. Was it a mobile one. Obviously things have changed since then. (Temp., here to day 38 degs. Not nice at all) oh for a cool one !!!

In the 60s and 70s, and maybe later, the snack bar in the market was Victor's, owned by Victor Mancini. I used to love the dripping toast. I don't remember another snack bar inside the market but I would think there had to be one. In those days, though, people didn't eat constantly so there weren't as many places to eat as there are now everywhere.

Yes it s great love some of the replies too which one is just what I was saying on another thread here, authentic as this person states below the vido 3 years ago. OF COURSE it's going to benefit trade for Coventry Market! Don't you see this is a wonderful, refreshing way to celebrate individual trading? If Sainsbury's made a musical it'd never be like this. Think of the awful homogenised Halifax adverts.? It's the homespun, authentic community charm of this that is so great, and precisely the kind of uncorporate thing the BBC should be doing a bit more of. Real people made this and you'd have to be blind to see how much it brims with their sincere pride

The discussion about the market brought a memory back for me: does anyone remember the fruit and veg stall that used to sell Grindrod's Kenilworth tomatoes? I remember the lovely smell of them, and they tasted far better than any others at the time. I can't remember the name of the stall, I think it was Lester something or other.. it had been in the old square Barracks Market, and moved to the round one when it opened. Maybe still there?
