On 3rd July 1951, Warwickshire completed a three-wicket County Championship victory over Gloucestershire at Courtaulds Ground. Warwickshire led by 150 runs on first innings, thanks to an unbeaten 157 from Bert Wolton. At the start of play on the final day, the visitors in their second innings were 263-5. They were bowled out for 328, with Tom Pritchard taking five wickets for the second time in the match. Chasing 179 for victory, Warwickshire started badly - they were 5-3 with Dick Spooner, Don Taylor and Jimmy Ord all dismissed, and 80-5 before a partnership of 74 between Tom Dollery and Ray Hitchcock put them in sight of victory. Warwickshire went on to clinch their second County Championship title, winning 16 of their 28 matches and losing only two.

50 years ago today, on 3rd July 1967, Coventry Bees travelled to Edinburgh to take on the Monarchs in a British League fixture. And it proved to be a difficult night for Bees, as they went down 49-29, with their riders unable to come to terms with the Meadowbank track - Rick France (twice), Ron Mountford and Les Owen all coming to grief during the meeting. Bees riders won only three of the thirteen heats, with Col Cottrell top scoring with nine points. EDINBURGH Bernt Persson r/r, Reidar Eide 11+1, George Hunter 14+1, Bill Landels 7+1, Doug Templeton (c) 12+1, Bert Harkins 2, Oyvind Berg 3+1 COVENTRY Nigel Boocock 8, Roger Hill 0, Rick France 5+1, Col Cottrell 9, Ron Mountford (c) 2+1, Les Owen 4, Clive Hitch 1 Bees went on to finish runners-up in the league, just two points behind Swindon Robins, and Nigel Boocock finished third in the national averages, behind Barry Briggs and Charlie Monk

Two England wicketkeepers were in direct opposition on 5th July 1952 when Warwickshire and Kent commenced a County Championship match at Courtaulds Ground - producing an odd statistic Oh my Dick Spooner compiled 117 on this day 65 years ago as Warwickshire amassed 304 in their first innings, with Godfrey Evans behind the stumps It was a match that Kent would go on to win by five wickets The odd statistic? 35 wickets fell in the match, but of these, only two were to catches by the Test Match wicketkeepers - one each to Spooner and Evans

6th Jul 1858 Margaret Hennessey was found hanged in the Workhouse - previously Whitefriars Monastery. Her husband had previously left her and taken one of their 6 children to Ireland, causing her to drink heavily to the point where a doctor described her as 'decidedly insane'!
