22nd Mar 1924 The body of T. E. Dunville (see 29th July 1867) was found in the Thames at Caversham Lock near Reading. As his popularity waned he'd suffered from depression and committed suicide. 22nd Mar 1939 Alfred Herbert carried out a successful excavation exercise - a total of 1,260 people were evacuated to trenches at the back of the offices. War was obviously becoming a real probability.

27/28th Mar 1959 The second half of the Oxford meeting featured a Junior Challenge between the home side and Bees. In the evening, attention turned to Banister Court where Southampton staged a Challenge Match to start their season, against "The Rest", which included Bees Arthur Forrest and Jim Lightfoot. This was followed by another Junior Challenge, Saints v Bees. Sadly, in heat 2 of this match, Bees' Alan Pearce collided with one of the young home riders, John Edwards, who had been directly in front of him. Pearce was thrown from his bike and took a heavy fall, with his helmet taking the full impact of the track surface. The local track doctor attended the stricken unconscious rider and immediately dispatched him off to hospital without fully realising the seriousness of the accident. Sadly Pearce never regained consciousness and passed away through the night, due to the severe head injuries he had sustained in the track crash. He was 23.
