13th May 2012 Former Bees rider Lee Richardson, 33, died in hospital in Wroc?aw, Poland, following a track crash at the Olympic Stadium in that city. #RICO

13th May 1939 A National Service Review was held in the War Memorial Park with demonstrations given by different armed services with mock air-raids and First Aid displays. 13th May 1967 A crowd of 32,600 watch Coventry City beat Millwall 3-1 to become Division Two champions - just one point ahead of Wolves, who only required a draw to become champions, but crashed to a 4-1 defeat by Crystal Palace.

14th May 2008 Coventry loses its head post office in Hertford Street, which had remained open since 1902, surviving the WW2 air-raids.

15th May 2009 The Specials end their 30th Anniversary tour in their home-town with a gig at the Ricoh Arena.

16th May 1955 Hazel O'Connor, singer, born. 16th May 1987 Sky Blues win the F.A. Cup, 3-2 against Tottenham Hotspur. (forum thread)

16th May 1973 On this day, Coventry Bees entertained Cradley United in a Midland Cup match at Brandon Stadium. It turned out to be one of the worst days in the history of Bees, with two riders very seriously injured in a crash in heat three. The bikes of John Harrhy and Les Owen became locked together as they raced at high speed down the back straight, resulting in them careering into the fence, with Owen colliding with a lamp standard. Harrhy received severe injuries, from which he recovered sufficiently to return to track action the following season, but to this day he still suffers considerably from those injuries. Owen suffered brain damage from which he never fully recovered, being paralysed down one side and experiencing short term memory loss. He died in 2004, aged 65, when he was hit by a train at Canley level crossing. For the record, Bees were beaten 36-42 by Cradley. Sheffield's Reg Wilson, guesting for Soren Karlsson, top scored for the home side with 13, whilst Bernt Persson recorded a 12 point maximum for the visitors. It was a night to forget - but one which will never be forgotten by anyone who witnessed such a terrible crash.

Well, I've given this topic the title of What happened on THIS day in Coventry's history?, so whether or not some members like any of the items I've chosen for each day of the year, the birth of a world famous pop-music performer here in this city, on this day in our city's history, surely qualifies for this topic? A few of the items I've listed might well be classed as trivial by many people, myself included, but my quest to find an event for every single day was a long and tortuous one, especially when getting down to the last few days, so I occasionally had to resort to some "less famous" items. This particular event, however, I do not count as trivial in the light of Hazel's achievements - she's worth listing for the single "Will You?" alone, which has by far the most atmospheric saxophone solo (by Wesley Magoogan) that I've ever heard. Having said that, everyone is entitled to their opinion - we can't all like the same things! I'd rather not see anyone's achievements belittled though, and I've always advocated the saying "if you can't say anything nice, best not say anything at all".
