James McCormack, the leader of the IRA unit operating in Coventry, bought a bicycle from Halford's in Smithford Street, to be used to carry the bomb used three days later in Broadgate.

The Sky Blues played their first game in the 2nd Division for 12 years as well as being the grand opening of the new Sky Blue Stand, with the three middle sections having been added to the two wing sections during the summer. 34,500 people turned up to witness a 2-0 home win against Plymouth. |

Robert de Limesey, the first Bishop of Coventry, died. From what we read about him, celebrations would've been the order of the day, as he was greedy in the extreme and treated Coventry's monks very badly. |

Friday 24th August 1979 was the last day of operation for Coventry's buses with an entry platform at the back and engine at the front. The very last such bus to run was 333, which was subsequently acquired by the transport museum and hopefully will be running at the heritage weekend. |

The newly crowned 'Bloody Mary' ordered Coventry's mayor to apprehend Rev. Hugh Symonds, vicar of St. Michael's, to deal with his 'Protestant tendencies'.

On 27th August 1983 Coventry City kicked off the new season in Division I with a 3-2 home victory over Watford, courtesy of two own goals, from Bolton and Rice, and a Terry Gibson goal. Team:
Suckling, Hormantschuk, Roberts, Grimes, Butterworth, Jacobs, Gynn (Platnauer), Daly, Bamber, Gibson, Thompson
On 27th August 1993 Coventry City travelled to Maine Road to take on managerless Manchester City, who had just sacked Peter Reid and were about to appoint Brian Horton. An 85th minute equaliser from Roy Wegerle secured the visitors a point after Mike Sheron had scored in the first half. Team:
