Gas Street

I lived in Gas Street in the fifties - did anyone else come from around there.

Here's more or less the full length of Gas Street from 1949 taken from Britain from Above - I've marked the Gas Tavern as seen above in red.

The Gas Club was along there as well. I used to go there with friends who were Gas Board apprentices.

In 1959 I joined a company, E. Laxon & Company, Wholesale Grocers and Provision Merchants, which was located in Gas Street. Would you remember that? As I understand it they relocated to Charter Avenue, a few years later, by which time I had left to join the Royal Navy. I also understand that the area was required for the Ring Road.

Does anyone remember the company (in or around Gas Street) who manufactured crisps? The bags had the three spires logo on and the proprietor and his wife used to come into the Gas Club for a drink.

The crisps with the "Three Spires" logo was Robinsons. Wholesale they were supplied in tins (I assume of 48 packets) rather than boxes. If you type "Robinsons" in the search box you will find a few references to them.

Yes I remember the factory, we used to go there from St Osburg's School at dinner time and ask if they had any left over.

What is that tree-lined area at top of photo Neil? Any ideas, and name of the street? Think it might be Naul's Mill Park? Middleborough Rd area?

I remember them. In those days they were everywhere in Coventry, just one local brand if I recall, like Lants pop. I think they were just plain potato crisps, not like today with dozens of flavours. And the little blue bags of salt; there was supposed to be one per packet, but I once had four in my packet! Occasionally you'd get more than one or two. I suppose you've heard the crisp story? A bloke goes into a shop and says "Do you sell crisps?". Shop assistant: "Certainly, what flavour sir?". Bloke: "Plain". Assistant: "Sorry, sir, we've only got helicopter".

I remember Gas St. in the fifties. Every Saturday, we'd go to town shopping, and my dad would park his old Rover 90 in Gas St. That was in the good old days when parking was free everywhere, and before traffic wardens (or whatever they call those non-jobs now) and yellow lines had been misinvented. I recall the terraced houses (which would probably be classed as slums by modern standards), then a big space (presumably bomb damage), and an interesting sign which read "Bass". I asked my parents what it meant. I was too young to understand pubs let alone beer.
