Hi Mcsporran
Thank you yet again for your help and assistance.
I have read the account regarding Eatoughs shoes that you posted, and already contacted the Hinkley Past and Present society that produced it in order that I can find out a little more.
As I travel around a great deal with my job (presently off having had an operation on my hand) I will try and get to the records office and view a copy of Eatoughs company records in the very near future, but for now thanks again and I will try and get a little further with Bren gun production at Daimler in Coventry, I'm just hoping that somebody will notice the thread and respond shortly. |

Sorry if I'm being a bit of a bore but I have asked this question before and had some response, which was excellent, but I thought I would post it again just in case somebody new has joined the site and has additional info to add.
I recently discovered that my father, Glyn Prewett worked at Daimler just prior, and during the early stages of WW2, he was involved in the production of Bren gun components and following the bombing in 1941 when the facility in Radford was destroyed a group of companies formed what became known as the Monogroup. This was a loose agreement of companies that arranged for armaments and aircraft components to be made at various points around the country and assembled at places that would be a difficult target for the Germans. My father was subsequently moved to work at a shoe factory in Burton on Trent to continue component production called Eatoughs Shoes, which is where he met my mother and the rest is history as they say. As I have already said when I last raised this subject the members were very helpful but I am still having a devils job locating information on the Daimler Bren gun production during this period and am hopeful that somebody can help. Hi Annewiggy, Thanks for your info, it looks very interesting and just what I am looking for but unfortunately for some reason I cannot open it. I assume it should open for me but something may have corrupted it. There is a contact email address on the message so I have written to them and am waiting for a response back as I write this, once again thank you for your help. Question |

Hi Potters Green Lad. I don't think they are on line documents, just an index as to what is available at the Herbert. You may have to go there to see the document or they may be able to scan it for you. Whichever way I hope it has some information that you want. It sounds as if John Thompson was there at the time. I wonder if he is still alive, you might be able to get to talk to him. My dad was at the Browns Lane Factory for some time during the war. He actually worked for Coventry Gauge and Tool but was sent to The Jaguar to train the women on the machines but he was still working for CG&T. |

Sorry I didn't understand, as I said I have contacted the Herbert thinking there was a problem opening the document so I will wait and see how they respond first before coming into Coventry as I live in Long Lawford just outside Rugby and if I am lucky they may take pity on me and scan it saving me the journey, but thanks again for your assistance. In 1947 my father bought an old Lanchester, with double de-clutch (differential gearbox?) As he worked at Rootes, Ryton, we heard as boys quite a lot about the difference from other vehicles. It had to be abandoned in 1949 when on a family trip to Grantham the 'big end' went and it had to be towed back to Coventry. What happened next I don't recall. The car was big and black and looked like the photo of Deanocity3 taken at Weston-Super-Mare. |

Does anyone recognize this disc/token? I think it must have belonged to my granddad who worked there for a long time.
