I briefly worked at the GEC Copsewood in the 70's and I remember an elderly local telling me there had been a water tank there, he said somewhere near the main building but couldn't remember exactly where.

There certainly was a tank in Jordan Well on the corner of Much Park St and I think another was constructed in a bomb damaged building in Hay Lane.

Midland Red, can't dispute it was a static water tank from that photo, but I don't see many fire chiefs about getting excited about it, even if others were. I suspect it was used, if at all, by the Auxiliary Fire Service. By 1950 it was a derelict building. Having been trained with a real water tank and equipment at Parkside I dismissed Jordan Well building as a SWT and I was wrong. But that is what this forum is about, we live and learn.

I was in the Coventry fire service 1963-66, there used to be a concrete static tank up from the Gaumont cinema. I'll stand corrected but I think the idea was to fill them from whatever sources (hydrants etc.) and a pump could then pump the water to where req'd. I remember it from the Saturday morning movie shows.

I have always thought that fire fighters did use canal water on the Foleshill Road during WW2, or at least it was available to them. This is because I seem to remember as a child seeing wooden hatches built into the sides of both the New Inn and Courtaulds bridges, which I was told had been used to feed the hoses through to the canal below. Later they were bricked up but evidence of them still seems to remain - (I have looked on Google Maps) - with lintels and in one case a white painted roundel above, probably for identification in the dark.

David H, I'm pretty sure you are correct about the hatches, but that was during wartime when the water was being used by many fire brigades, but by 1944 the raids were over and it wasn't needed, or that's the way I saw it.

Wine drinkers must have been disappointed in August 1941 when they realised these barrels only contained water!! From the Coventry Telegraph courtesy of British Newpaper Archive.

Bit of real stone wall on the left there. I'm guessing that it was west of the Palace Yard but I'm not sure. The remains of the Sword and Mace?

Hi all, if my childhood memories (1950's) serve me well, there used to be a large water tank at the end of Caludon Road where it meets Clay Lane? It eventually got filled in and a corner shop and a house were built on it. I lived in Caludon Road at the time.
