This looks very much like New Street.

Looking at maps - the great shot Dutchman found earlier - I think this was actually taken from New Street looking across south to Freeth Street.
Freeth Street always seems a strange shape to be with its sharp turn then dead end - never actually going anywhere?
Intriguing nonetheless as its another of those with very few images on.

FYI - I happened to be at Cov Uni yesterday and in the area by the George Eliot building there is a board with one of the old images here of New Street - they have planted a line of trees to mark the line of the old road which now runs through the campus. |

We've seen similar images to this one before but this has greater detail of the bracing in its final days.

Thanks for that one, I finally found my sense of direction when I saw the dear old Gaumont in the background.

That last picture Neil is the other end of the route from Freeth Street. It's from a very nice collection at Historic England.

Pre clearence of New Street still with original buildings on Priory Street with 'scrub' land where the New Cathedral would be.

Here's possibly the best ever shot of the Dispensary on the corner of New Street/Priory Street in 1941 -

Two good photographs there TSP. The first one is looking north west at what was left of Freeth Street. New Street is just beyond the buildings you can see. The entrance to New street is where the road curves to the right, past the people looking out of their door. The second is almost a Christmas card if it wasn't for the bracing. |
