It does sound like the Forty Thieves went downmarket at some point, as late night venues invariably do. It looks like it was a reasonably respectable place around the late 60s but that was before I frequented (or inspected) such premises. By the mid-70s it was certainly of a more dubious nature. It is an interesting phenomenon though. I remember when Mr George was quite a decent late night option, but it went downhill as newer venues opened, such as the City Centre Club. I guess they become less choosy about their clientele as competition increases.

I never set foot in the place as, along with the Top Spot, it had a pretty dreadful reputation. Having read a book penned by a doorman when it became Busters, I think I made the right decision!
Can't understand this at all. Drank in Busters virtually every night of the week from 1982 to around 1989 and never recall one bit of trouble. Out of interest, what is the book you refer to, sounds an interesting read. I was quite pally with one of the bouncers... can't think of his name.

I was given a pile of old photos & postcards a while ago, and among them I just came across this, which I thought might bring back memories for those who went there. I'm guessing it's from the 1960s, but someone might be able to place it more accurately. Forum image I've enlarged the centre so you can make out the Bird Cage at the entrance to the City Arcade....

Thanks for posting the photos Rob, they bring back memories of a once great venue.
