Warners and Evans shops

Any info on what shops Warners and AF (?) Evans were? Both in Cross Cheaping.

What year are you looking for? In 1935 there was a G. & F. Evans - Jewellers, at 36 Cross Cheaping. They also had premises at Spon St. and Station St. No sign of Warners in the listing for Cross Cheaping.

I didn't find anything in the Spennell's 1912 directory either.

Evans may have called themselves jewellers but they were really pawnbrokers with shops all over Coventry. Warner's may have been bootmakers.

Thanks That Evans seems to be it. In the Ironmonger Row picture it has a jewellers look about it but too rough to tell. It also has wording that may be Diamond Merchant.

Also, I am wondering if Warners is now McDonalds, the location seems right and it possibly could have been remodelled?

Sorry Osmiroid, Ironmonger Row was further up the hill and not next to the Forbidden Planet. Warners was more likely where Office Angels stands. There were some buildings from this area that survived as they had already been updated before the war but I haven't tracked what happened to them.

Thanks Helen, I'm ok with where Ironmonger Row was but more difficult to work out what was across the road from just sitting in my house.

If you look at the photo of Warners you get almost a straight line along the north side of Ironmonger Row. On the Fire insurance map that puts the white building as number 22 and Warners next door as 20 and 21. Palmer lane as it is now, looks at what was 26 (McDs). Now you can say Warners was the left end of William Hill but not that it was McDs.

Thanks. I have never been able to see the fire insurance maps better than low resolution on my tablet so rarely look there. On the map, on the Warners building is that "GRO" for grocer?

I was wondering that myself. Yes, grocers sounds plausible. c01351 shows Warners on the right c04859 shows the previous appearance of the building on the very left of the postcard. c05943 shows what was opposite the current Palmer Lane.

In 1901 Albert John Warner is a licenced victualler at 27 Cross Cheaping. On the newspaper site there is an A Warner advertising as an ale and stout merchant in the 1890's but his address is 35 Smithford Street.

Helen, yes, I used the one with Warners at the right when I did a couple of new postings on my blog. It started out about the location of the Pilgrims Rest and turned into Ironmonger Row & Cross Cheaping as well. I didn't know about the Banks House. Anne, maybe it was like Padstein but Warnerville! Heathite, thanks for trying, them maps look great - if only I could see them clearly!

You can zoom into the maps, or at least you used to be able. I did a great many screen prints and stitched them all back together in Powerpoint to give me a useable map (yes I am mad). I wanted to be able to read all the little notes, particularly the building number. The number of floors and roof material is marked on many of the buildings as well as the use. I'd forgotten that the left side wasn't on the same map as the right. I sometimes stuck the two sides of a road together to work out things like - what was at the end of the street - like Ironmonger Row. I often don't know the modern layout because it's the wrong temporal direction. I start old and work backwards. The aerial photos are also invaluable. It took me ages to spot all the views of particular buildings from each aerial shot. eg I was missing any view of one pub on Greyfriars Lane until I spotted a fuzzy version of it on one photo, just peeking between two taller buildings. Any other angle and it was obscured.
