I was told by an aunt that there was a rumour in the family that we had a Jewish relative who had a warehouse in or around Swan Lane and stored bananas. My aunt was born in 1911 so I don't know when this relative was there. Can anyone help please? I know my gt grandfather Charles Woodward had a coal yard in Harnall Row. But he isn't the one she mentioned.

Hi Annie. I remember Fyffes bananas based in Barras Heath Wholesale Market which backed onto Frederick Bird's playing field, the school being in Swan Lane. There was always train trucks parked in the railway sidings between the playing field and the back of the market with the Fyffes logo on them waiting to be unloaded. Thumbs up

Hi thanks for that info Mick. Not sure if it's a later date than I am looking for, as my aunt who told me about it was born 1911. I was guessing it was either before she was born or when she was young. She always said it was in Swan Lane Wave

I attended Freddies Infants & Junior schools 1954-1960 and there was a Fyffes warehouse just inside Swan Lane near the junction with Harnall Lane, on the side going down towards Highfield Road and Walsgrave Road/Ball Hill, if that is any help to you, Annie.

To confirm what Coventry49 said, my mother says the warehouse was there certainly in 1948 when she moved into the area. She remembers it in the same location that Coventry49 does and also that it was set back from Swan Lane and reached by some kind of driveway. She doesn't remember any name associated with it. I wonder if there are directories from the forties/fifties that might give us more of a clue?
