The maps tie in with an older farmhouse (of the right footprint) being demolished and a newer range built further back. Only the gates match. Weak I know. Google Ah, an early name for the place was the Whitley Stud Farm, which ties in with this photo from the Fourtoes site. Map showing the farm - top left. Whitley Stud Farm

Yes, pretty certain that's J.B. - no idea about the location, though.

OK, I think that I've identified it. I suggest that it is the back of what was called the Board Vaults on the south side of Spon Street. On the left you can just see the window/roof/drainpipe of this court.

I'm not entirely sure this is even Coventry. However, what intrigued me was 'what the 'eck is a wooden stocks doing on the end of that pole?'!

Wow, well spotted! Though the house owner might suggest that you were missing the elephant in the front room. Lol

It says Birmingham Co-op on the van. That's what I call 'deliver to your door'.

Great detective work Derek. There is a difference between stocks, where the person were seated with their ankles trapped, and pillories, where the person's neck and wrists were trapped and they were standing up. The top bit looks like a pillory for two and I suppose they could have stood on the platform, although it looks very dodgy. Maybe the top is original and they raised it up in modern times? Like in Coventry, obviously the market place was a popular area for punishment.... all the rotting leftovers?

I guess the double pillory would have at one time been located in the local market place for people to throw rotten veg at the occupants, etc. How and why it ended up being placed outside a domestic dwelling is a mystery. The buildings look as though they are late Victorian, I wonder if the first occupier had them re-located there. We must have been typing a response at the same time Helen! The pillory may have been raised on a plinth with steps leading up to it, so the offenders were placed well above ground level for the rotten veg to have been on target!
