Black and White Minstrels, Troise and his banjoliers, Elsie and Doris Waters, Arthur Askey 'Busy little Bee', Max Miller, Reginald Foort at the Organ, BBC Variety Orchestra, Harry Roy and his Band. Think there was a show called "Listen to the Band". A few days ago I was watching something about Blackpool and the blitz, Ivy Benson and her all girls band, the Squadronaires band. There was a programme of brass band music, going back farther still was the great Caruso.

Have we had? "The Voice of Them All" - Peter Cavanagh. Just read in a brief obit somewhere on the net, that he pre-dated Culshaw, by doing impressions of people while they were there.

Others... Josef Locke, Donald Peers, Ronnie Ronalde. Was their show Variety Bandbox? Incidentally, there is a Music While You Work programme from 1957 on internet of William Pethers and the Coventry Theatre Orchestra.

fidobsa, you must be very proud, they were quite popular. Believe I may have seen them at the Hippodrome a couple of times but can't be sure.

He never liked talking about those days so I don't know any details. It is possible he came in for some stick for not being in the forces but he failed the medical, probably due to asthma. He did say they were often on the radio but didn't make any records during the war years. I don't know the dates or even which band he joined first but he was also in Felix Mendelssohn Hawaiian Serenaders, playing accordion and Hawaiian guitar. Regrettably I never heard him play either instrument. He still had his accordion when I was a kid but it had been stored in various damp places and no longer worked. He had a piano when I was a small child and later had a series of different electronic organs.
