I am trying to find out what happened to the wife of a g g uncle of mine. Her name was Harriet Petty and she was born Harriet Baker, 1863 in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, and was the daughter of John Baker and Sarah Lewis. In 1911 she is recorded as living at 33 Ford Street, Coventry. Her husband Charles Petty, born 1855 Shaftsbury, Dorset, was a coachman and by 1901 census he's recorded as being paralysed and Harriet is a dressmaker living at 6 Albert Street, Southgate, Middlesex. On his death certificate he died 1 March 1912 at Edmonton Infirmary, Middlesex and Harriet records her details as widow of deceased, in attendance, of 33 Ford Street, Coventry. A couple of her sisters are recorded as seamstresses/dressmakers and one is running a boarding house with boarders that worked for "Singers". Does anyone know of this family, the street or by chance any of her siblings?

Hi, have not been able to find Harriett, I would think it possible she remarried as many did for security. However I did come across this in the Lichfield Mercury 5th September 1902 I thought you might find interesting.

According to Spennell's Annual Directory of Coventry & District 1912-1913: "33 Ford Street: Petty Mrs., Tregonwell House". [See University of Leicester - Spennell's Directory - page 502.] Smile

Harriet's father John came from Stoneleigh and her mother Sarah from Merevale. They had nine children. Harriet was born in July 1862 and baptised at Stoneleigh on 31 August 1862, when her father was a shepherd living at East Lodge. Harriet was a servant to a Mr Rudd, an unmarried surgeon, at 2 Warwick Row Coventry in the 1881 census. On 26 August 1884 she married by banns Charles Petty at Stoneleigh. Her father was by now the deer park keeper. Charles was a coachman living in Marylebone, son of John Petty a carrier. He was 28 and she was 21. They both signed their names. They were in Wandsworth in 1891 and Southgate in 1901, where he has no occupation, being paralysed, and she is a dressmaker earning a living for both of them. In 1911 she was a boarding house keeper with three male lodgers at 33 Ford Street. She had been married for 26 years but had no children. He was now a patient at Edmonton Infirmary. I have nothing on them after that, but her siblings are Eliza, William, Mary Ann, Emily, John Robert, Sarah, Augusta and Lewis. We have Sheila Woolf of Stoneleigh History Society to thank for this information. Regards Derek
