I have in my possession the attached WW1 certificate relating to Private A J Chatwin, which I found in an old piano many years ago. I am hoping to engage those on the forum who may be able to help in returning the said certificate to the Chatwin family. Thank you all in advance...

Hello Yanster The certificate appears to have been awarded to Alfred John Chatwin whose birth was registered in Coventry in the 3rd quarter of 1899 and who died, also in Coventry, with the death registered in the 1st quarter of 1969 aged 69.

Further to research by charabanc. 1901 census lists a 1 year old Alfred Chatwin living with parents John & Laura and brother Leonard (9 months) at 63 Sparkbrook Road (Hillfields) Coventry. 1911 census lists 11 year old Alfred J Chatwin living with parents John & Laura and brothers Leonard (10 years) Horace (5) and Stanley G (1) Stanley G Chatwin died in 1913 aged 1. The Service Records for Alfred John Chatwin (dated 27.11.17) lists an 18 year old residing with his father John at 56 Highfield Road, Coventry. Alfred was in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, had two service numbers 42987 & 44774 and he was awarded the British war Medal and the Victory Medal. Unable to find marriage for Alfred John Chatwin. Alfred's 2nd youngest brother Horace (born Coventry, 22 Nov 1906 and died on16 Jan 1996 in Birmingham) According to the Electoral Register Horace lived at 43 Tedbury Crescent, Birmingham in 1935. In 1938 Horace married Christine Mary Weston. They had two children Roger G Chatwin born 1941 in Sutton Coldfield and Colin Chatwin born 1943 in Sutton Coldfield. Roger married Jill Milner in 1963 and they had two children John Roger in 1966 & Mark in 1968.(Both in Sutton Coldfield) Unable to find marriages for either. Colin Chatwin married Janet M Cooper in 1965 and they had a son Simon Richard Chatwin in 1968 in Sutton Coldfield. Simon married Joanne Higgins in 2005. It looks therefore that there are living relatives of Alfred John Chatwin although not direct..

Hi Yanster, I have found that Alfred J. Chatwin had a younger sister, Iris Laura Chatwin. She was born in Coventry, 25th November 1916 (mothers maiden name: Pickering). She married Charles H. Ballard in 1940 in Coventry. She died in Coventry (Iris L. Ballard) in January 1989, aged 72. I also looked in the 1955 and 1960 electoral rolls - The three brothers: Alfred J. Chatwin, Leonard Chatwin and Horace Chatwin were all registered as living in Fir Tree Avenue, Coventry. Good luck with your search finding the family of Mr Chatwin, Thumbs up Luke.

Hi again GJS Your research is invaluable and most impressive! When time allows, I'd like to set a greater challenge to those who might be interested in researching further, my great-grandfather x4, William Brook(e)s, Freeman of Coventry, who had a rope making business in Spon End (Rope Walk) c 1790. In return, I hope to create interest by providing some documentation, including a simple map and a transcribed tenancy agreement between the said William Brooks and Holy Trinity Church. Until then, thank you for your assistance. Yanster
