Jo Roberts on FB has shared some images from her Grandfather of the 1926 Carnival. I'm thinking this one might be Jordan Well with the Freeth St junction behind the 'Big-Head' on the right - agreed? That section of North-side row was rarely captured.

Right on all counts Neil Double thumbs up The building on the left (a bakers' shop at number 14) was given a Tudor makeover before the war and is the partly destroyed building on the left of this iconic shot from Rob's collection. The Mattock and Spade was the three storey building at number 17. Forum image

Great stuff Helen - thanks for confirming. Rob, might be a useful one for the Pubs section for The Mattock & Spade? Jo was happy for it to be shared. The directory has the Baker at No.14 as 'Wells & Brooks.'

I've changed my mind. Blush The numbering niggled me and every time I've tried to work it out I get a different answer. I have seen the sign for the Mattock and Spade on the tall building but I think that it was the smaller building to the left that was the true location. It even looks like it has the older style pub sign between the two windows. That would mean that the building on the left was a boot makers at 15, 16, not the bakers at 14. It's not listed as that in every directory but it would fit the partial sign. I'm still not 100% sure. Sorry.

Was this one of it taken from the then nearly created Whitefriars Street - so looking over to what was the backs on Jordan Well?

Yes, it's taken from White Friars Street looking at the backs of Jordan Well (or at least the yards off Jordan Well) and the building on the right is the back of the chapel discussed here. The problem with a detailed map is that it was on the join of 4 maps. A rougher map is below, but I joined the bits of the bigger maps at the link above.

This is a fairly 'standard' view along Jordan Well looking at Gosford Street, however, I don't think we often see that row on the right - was that part of the section that went for Whitefriars Street, Helen? The Peoples Drapers Ad on the corner of Cox Street ties up with the CD image earlier in this thread (post#146) -

Wow Neil, that's a really good picture. Yes, the ones on the right are the corner of Whitefriars Street. Nice view of the ones on Gosford Street too.

It's hard to believe that this is the rear of the same buildings. Because the roof comes down to the doorway, it looks huge. That arrangement was called a cat slide.

I can't offhand think of a shop with a clock Jo. Thumbs up The clock on the council house was probably visible from there, though prior to that being built possibly they relied on the church clocks and chimes? Plus personal watches.
