Did anyone as a 15/16 year old work on Saturdays at Woolworths, early 1960s, and would like to share memories? I was there 1960/61. I loved following girls from the cash room and going round with money bags over both shoulders as the tills were emptied, but there were much worse jobs as well.

I was a Saturday girl there in the early/mid 70s. I loved it and made lots of great friends. It was a wonderful place to meet kids from other schools - there was a large contingent from Ullathorne.

Hello, I also worked at Woolies, store number 123. I was a maintenance engineer my boss was Gene Cook. The store manager was Mr Drinkall. I met my wife at Woolies, loved the store and so sad to see it gone, thought it was there for all time. Like you I had a great time there and made many friends.

Hey Radford Kid!! My memories are a bit dim - do you recall anyone from the Ham Room in the basement, who was the manager there? Was Noddy there in your day? I was paid 17/6d for a Saturday but was stopped 3d for a stamp. I remember a lad possibly from maintenance who always had two crusty cheese batches most lunchtimes from the serving hatch in that small male staff room - and the window there that overlooked the busker playing a trumpet on the pavement below. I think Jack (Bayton?) was the supervisor or basement manager in my day. We Saturday lads had to report to him hoping someone else had already been sent to help out on the Baling Machine.

Hi all, I was a Saturday girl in Woolies from 1964-1966, I was started on the cooked meat counter in the basement, but very soon moved onto the plant and bulb area as I had some knowledge of gardening, we had different coloured overalls depending what job was done, I remember yellow for food and green for the plants, I think there were brown and white too, they were handed back at the end of the day and a clean one collected the following Saturday. There was a lot of trust given to us and I enjoyed it, hard work and your till had better balance at the end of the day, all for 10/6d a day when I started, rising to 15/-

I had a Saturday job as a teenager at Woolworths in Bedworth town centre in the late 1960's. My job was mainly in the stock room at the back. I would help to unpack goods delivered for sale and storing them. I well remember having to climb up onto high shelves to stack items, and once having two very painful eyefuls of calico dust from a stack of welcome mats! I would also flatten the dozens of cardboard boxes which the delivered goods had been packed in and place them in the baler. This was basically a large steel- caged hydraulic press which compressed the flattened boxes. You would slide in the flattened cardboard boxes at the top, then press the hydraulic lever to press them down. When the press was full when compressed, you would pass steel wires through grooves at the top and bottom and tie then securely so that when the hydraulic pressure was released the wires took the strain of the compressed cardboard. The resulting bales were very heavy and needed a lot of manhandling to stack them ready for removal. I also had to sweep the floors of the shop. The brushes and buckets were kept in a locked room at the front of the shop. I remember the door was covered in thick brown wood-grained Formica, much like the rest of the shop surfaces which were edged with chrome. I remember once when the store had suffered a spate of shoplifting, I was tasked to be store detective! I remember walking round the store trying to look inconspicuous whilst looking for anything suspicious. There were no surveillance cameras then! However I didn't catch anybody and was soon sweeping up again. Happy Days!
