For those accessing the newspaper archives I have just flicked through 19th century issues of "The Illustrated London News" and there are quite a few adverts there for Coventry firms. In addition there are some articles about Coventry with a few drawings and I spotted a picture of Coventry volunteer fire brigade about 1860 I believe. Further investigation may find more gems.

Some images from the ILN have appeared on eBay. I've been tempted to sign up to the newspaper archive to search it for more. Annoyingly, many of the Coventry newspaper images are poor but there are some real gems.

The advert for Ida Wallworth furrier!! She was my maternal grandma. I remember playing in her shop aged about 4 yrs with my brother outside in his pram. It was located on the slope going down from Jordan Well on the right hand side, under where the ring road flyover is now and the university car park.

On 17th Oct 2012 3:43pm, MisterD-Di said: Modern Machine Tools were more than just a local enginering company. Their football team was effectively a nursery team for Coventry City and apparently lost only one game in four years in the late 40s/early 50s. They supplied several players who went on to play for City's first team. The most notable of these was goalkeeper Reg Matthews, who was City's first player to be capped by England despite playing in Div.3 South at the time.
Reading this old thread, and coming across Modern Machine Tools. During the summer, I dug up a bronze plaque in my sons garden that says "Presented by MODERN MACHINE TOOLS RIFLE CLUB June 1954"
