Does anyone know anything or have any photos of Whoberley Hall Farm? It was pulled down in 1938 to allow much of the later part of Whoberley district to be built. I understand that it was a historic building, and the staircase and other parts of it of interest were sold and shipped to the USA. More or less where it was, during the war, a lot of hostels were built to house people made homeless by the Blitz, and also imported workers employed to do the war damage work.
Included was a school - Whoberley Hall School (what else? ) which I think was rebuilt later; but why was the wartime building put up - for bombed-out people's kids?
Any photos/memories folks? |

Yep, and so did the village of 'Whorwell' on Hearsall (originally Horsall) Common where a good time was had by all as it was just outside the jurisdiction of the city fathers. The exact nature of the entertainment on offer in Whorwell has never been fully explained!

I often wondered what it was like. I think I saw a photo once, but a long time ago, and can't remember it. Must have been quite a nice place, from the accounts that I heard. Whoberley Hall farm's land must have been adopted by the council in 1938, when the later houses were built there, surely? And that raises another issue - what about Allesley and Tile Hill, since it was sort of between them, or at least, nearer to the town? |

As what I ve found out about it Keith it had a moat around it, and the big house was from 1500 time, there was a fight if you like with councils about the land it sat upon. Yes must of been a wonderful house. |

Allesley came under Meriden.
Tile Hill, Styvechall and Canley all came under Stoneleigh as also I think did the two Fletchamstead villages. |

Not since 1928 when it came under Coventry.

Not specifically Keith. There's a map showing Coventry's boundary extensions by year in the foreward to "The Coventry We Lost" (Vol 1) if you can find a copy. |

Hi dutchman
I did some searching on Google for Whoberley Hall Farm, and found the following page:
http://www.gone-butnotforgotten.org.uk/tilehillkid/WhoberleyHall.html
Also found this:
http://cv5.coventrytelegraph.net/2008/04/when-whoberley-had-one-house.html Which says that Lyndale Rd was the first part of Whoberley to be developed. I don't think that's correct, because several other roads were completed in the vicinity, and adopted before the war started, but Lyndale Rd wasn't either completed or adopted.
Also thought this interesting:
http://www.gone-butnotforgotten.org.uk/tilehillkid/ - and it was obviously very close to the site of "Triumph" building we've been trying to identify more accurately. |
