I noticed on another link a map of 1936, and it shows a Triumph Gloria works sited just up from the Dunlop site on Holbrook Lane. I have done a little investigation and found that the General Manager was a "Claude Holbrook" 1886-1979. He joined the company in 1919, but there is no record of the factory in the history of Triumph as I have found. I also wonder if the name was used for the area or is it just a coincidence." Yet another snip of history waiting to be uncovered. Thumbs up
Always looking forward to looking at the past.

"Most of the TRIUMPH Gloria works off Holbrook Lane survives. It is the only factory remaining from the firm's days as an independent manufacturer, and was used to produce cars from 1935 until 1939 when the firm passed into receivership." According to old maps it was previously the Gloria Cycle Works. The Free Library

On the back of this thread I've just been reading up on the Works whilst obviously hard at work Big grin "Siegfried Bettmann - Triumph's founder died at his home "Elm Bank", Stoke Park" - apparently. So that's where the name comes from. My wife's been on several Council courses at Elm Bank. Anyone know where Siegfried was buried?

Siegfried Bettmann died on 23rd September 1951. An old acquaintance, Canon R.L. Donaldson of Ketton, Lincolnshire, conducted his funeral at Canley Crematorium. A good small book on his life is available at the Herbert bookshop, it's No.24 of the Coventry and County Heritage series 'The Triumph of Siegfried Bettmann' by Gordon Maycock. Thumbs up

There is a photo of Bettmann with the group of Godiva runners in the 'Mystery Photos' section. An extensive biography of Bettmann is being prepared at the moment by a countryman of Bettmann's with a scheduled publication date for next summer ..... in German!!

As we are discussing Siegfried Bettmann the founder of Triumph and mayor of Coventry there was also his partner Mauritz Schulte that purchased their first premises in Earls Court, 11-13 Much Park Street while Bettmann was in London. Does anyone have photos of those premises in Much Park Street, as I've looked but found nothing?

This is a picture of the Triumph in 1896. I don't know if this is Much Park Street or Priory Street. The book says the company was first established in Much Park Street with a capital of £10,000 and so rapid has been the success of the firm that it has found it necessary to extend their accommodation by the erection of new premises in Priory Street which in completeness of arrangement and organisation are second to none in the City of Coventry. The business was reconstructed as a limited company in July 1895 with a capital of £45,000. Mr Alderman Tomson, chairman, Mr G W Sawyer, vice chairman, and Messrs S Bettmann and M J Schulte, Managing Directors. It goes on to describe the layout and descriptions of various bikes with pictures.

This dates back to the 30's outside the Priory Street works where this photo was taken, it looks like a Triumph 'Gloria' as the poster on the window reads - "Triumph Gloria wins Monte Carlo Rally, light car class, best performance of any British car".
