My grandfather was an A.R.P. warden during the Second World War, in Coventry. His name was Alfred Frederick Davis, known as Mark and he worked for Dunlop. He lived at Scotchill. I have been told that when the King visited on Saturday 16 November 1940, there is a photograph in existence of him meeting the King. I have searched the newspaper records and other publications and have been very unsuccessful. I was wondering if anyone knew of any other photographs that might be in existence.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ben Davis

Hallo hihehim, I have a picture in my gallery of the King being presented to the St John's ambulance brigade members who were on duty during the blitz. My grandfather is the 3rd man from the back. Maybe your grandfather is in the picture. |

Thank you for your help. He is not in these photos and I have looked through the ones with the Heritage Centre in Coventry. In the archives the next issue of the paper is missing but I know they exist and were published in the paper. Ben Davis

Hello Dave. My dad was in the St John's during the war but was home during the November blitz. I have kept his uniform with its 3 stripes on the arm and hat with the white band. Do you happen to know who the 4th from the back is? |

Hi Choirboy, what was your dad's name? I used to visit the ambulance station in the 50s where my grandfather used to work and I remember a few names. |

My father was Alf Glover, but I believe he left the St John's late 40's or early 50's. I think he gave up because he used to work an insane amount of overtime at the GEC, including late evenings, all day Saturdays and Sunday mornings. He qualified for the Coventry "Tool Workers Allowance", so we were relatively well off. But the GEC were known for paying the lowest rates. I think it was time and a quarter for weekday overtime but time and a half for Saturday and double time for Sunday. I see the Model Room at Copsewood is now replaced by a pond! |
