Stoneleigh Terrace

Does anyone have any other photos of Stoneleigh Terrace. This was a lovely row of multi-floored houses at the end of Greyfriars Green which survived the war but were sadly bulldozed for the ring road. I have seen one image of them in David McGrory's Now and Then book.

Hi Neil, I thought there was one displayed on the forum in another thread - I'm sure I'd seen one but I've searched and can't find it If anyone else remembers where it might be, let us know!

Hi Neil George Singer lived at 8 Stoneleigh Terrace. Before he built Coundon Court.

I think this is Stoneleigh Terrace, Neil. There is also another image on the "Your memories" page in no 29 The Life Expectancy of Mike Spellacy.

Fantastic! Thank you Anne! That's the place. What a lovely row of housing. Presumably that would have been a fairly prestigious address back in the day? To think they survived the war but went because of the ring road. Do you know what year those images are from?

The top one says 1950 and the bottom one he has put as 1965. Yes it must have been a lovely row of buildings. How are they allowed to demolish buildings like these.

Lovely photos According to 'British History On-line' and the old newspaper archives, the buildings were designed by Murray. Didn't he design the Art School, it's the same style. The building plots were advertised for sale in the Coventry Herald in 1860. There was one on a corner, called 'The Tower'. Wonder who lived there?

During WW1 The Coventry Armaments Output Committee established their offices in "The Towers". in 1911 it was lived in by Dr Reginald Carmichael Worsley

I might be totally wrong but the first image of Stoneleigh Terrace shows a telephone box on the right. I seem to remember the driving test centre being around there in the early 1960s.

I've been exchanging research with Paul Michael Kennelly on the True Coventarian Facebook page who produced this other cracker. What a lovely spot.

Hi Dream Warwick Road at Greyfriars is not a bad spot but not a patch on how it appears in that image. Certainly more the poorer for not having Stoneleigh Terrace there in the background. Stoneleigh Terrace was designed by the Irish-born Coventry architect James Murray who was quite a prolific architect within the City. His work includes: Freemans Orphanage School, Swanswell Terrace/Place (where the Cov and Warwick once stood); New build to the side of St Mary's Guildhall; The Chancel, All Saints, Allesley; Blue Coat School; Trinity School; The Municipal School of Art; Gulson Library; Corn Exchange (ABC Empire); Stoneleigh Terrrace; a pair of dwellings in Hales Street; St. Michael's Baptist Church (pop. Golden Cross); The Baths, Hales Street; and much more. It seems he designed half of Victorian Coventry, plus much more elsewhere in Britain. At one point he was also partner to the great EW Pugin. Amazingly he only lived until he was 32 and is buried in London Road Cemetery. I'm sure you'll find all you need to know on Sir Thomas White - chiefly for Coventry the benefactor for King Henry VIII School. The statue is still there though I'm not certain if it's in its original spot (appears to be).

Thank you Neil, always a mindful of information. You mention Blue Coat School (sorry it's not Stoneleigh Terrace) but we always thought that was a good school, so I presume you mean the modern one. I was wondering if that one was still there.
